Internet of Things ( IoT ) is a very vast field. Nowadays it is being used in almost every area related to technology ( from autonomous vehicles to drones, from household appliances to wearables, and many more ).
There are four main challenges in the development and growth of the internet of things. These are:

Interoperability in IoT is the major requirement for the development of the internet of things. In IoT, there are various manufacturers manufacturing and selling the products but the devices/ products of different manufacturers are not compatible with each other and they can’t communicate with each other.
Interoperability is the ability of the devices/ products to communicate with each other irrespective of the manufacturer or technical specifications.
For e.g. A refrigerator is from company ‘A’ and Television from company ‘B’. Both devices are smart devices and have the ability to send and receive information. But, they are unable to communicate with each other and can’t take action in a coordinated manner because of the different manufacturers.
This creates a huge barrier in achieving the true power of the IoT i.e. the world of connected things/ devices.
Interoperability is one of the key requirement which can help to make the lives little better. It is the essential one through which the IoT can achieve it’s true value and can serve in a better way.
2. Security and Privacy:
In IoT systems, the devices are connected to each other over the internet and can send and receive data. This means that the data is open and can be stolen/ attacked if proper security measures are not applied to protect the data of the devices.
IoT is a nascent market, and many of the manufacturers are interested in getting their products in market quickly and therefore, they are not taking the necessary steps to build the secured products from the start because it is a time taking process.
Some limitations in applying the advanced security measures are coming because many devices do not offer advanced security features. For e.g.
Sensors that monitor humidity or temperature cannot handle advanced encryption or other security measures. So, the limitations of the components of devices or devices is also a huge barrier.
The IoT devices are connected devices and very much vulnerable to security and privacy threats. Privacy in IoT devices is the topic that demands special consideration. It is very important to protect the information of individuals from exposure in the IoT environment.
3. Increased Resource Cost:
As the IoT is a nascent market and a lot of work is under progress. In IoT, nothing is open source so, the developer needs to build everything from scratch and this increases the cost of development and deployment. That is why new startups requires a lot of investment in developing the internet of things products.
For hardware developers in IoT, they need to test a lot of hardware devices in order to make their product and also need to code everything to make their product work in the desired manner even is the same product already exists in the market. Similarly, for software developers, they need to write the code from scratch to enable the functionalities of the IoT devices. Free libraries of the code are not available for use. This increases the resource cost and time of development and deployment of the product.
